19.4 say, tell, ask farkı
Neden zorlanıyoruz
Türkçede "söylemek" tek fiil ve kime söylendiği ek ile belirtiliyor: "bana söyledi", "ona dedi". Fiil değişmiyor.
İngilizcede kime söylendiğini belirtip belirtmemek fiili değiştiriyor:
• say → kişi almıyor: He said he was tired.
• tell → kişi zorunlu: He told me he was tired.
En sık hata: "He said me" ✗. Bu hata çok yaygın ve hemen fark ediliyor, ama kuralı tek cümlede tutmak mümkün: say'e kişi gelmez, tell'e kişi gelmek zorunda.
Üçüncüsü ask ve o soru için: "She asked me where I lived."
Bir de speak ve talk var — bunlar "konuşmak", söylenen şeyi değil konuşma eylemini anlatıyorlar ve nesne almıyorlar.
say: kişi almıyor
Söylenen şeyi alıyor, kişiyi almıyor. Kişi eklenecekse to gerekiyor.
He said me he was late.
He said he was late.
He said to me that he was late.
to ile olanaklı ama seyrek.
She said nothing.

Kalıplaşmış: say hello/goodbye/sorry/thanks.
tell: kişi zorunlu
Arkasına kime söylendiği gelmek zorunda.
Kuralın birkaç istisnası kalıplaşmış: tell the truth, tell a lie, tell a story, tell the time, tell a joke. Bunlarda kişi gelmeyebiliyor: "Always tell the truth."
He told that he was late.
He told me that he was late.
She told us a story.
Tell me about it.

Birine bir şey yapmasını söylemek tell + kişi + to ile kuruluyor.
He told me to wait.

ask: soru ve rica
Soru için ask, rica için ask + kişi + to. Kişi seçimlik.
She asked me where I lived.

speak ve talk: konuşma eylemi
Bunlar söylenen şeyi değil konuşmayı anlatıyor. Nesne almıyorlar; edat alıyorlar.
speak daha resmi ve tek yönlü (bir sunum, bir dil), talk daha günlük ve karşılıklı. "I need to talk to you" samimi, "I need to speak to you" ciddi bir şey olduğunu ima ediyor — bu fark pratikte hissediliyor.
I spoke to her yesterday.

Diğer aktarma fiilleri
say ve tell her şeyi anlatıyor ama belirli fiiller kullanmak hem daha kesin hem daha yetkin.
He explained that it was broken.
explain kişi için to alıyor.

Dört fiilin kuralı tek yerde.
say + şey (kişi yok): He said it.
tell + kişi + şey: He told me it.
ask + (kişi) + soru: He asked (me) why.
speak/talk + to + kişi: I spoke to him.
that-cümleleri ve that'in düşmesi
Bu fiillerin arkasına bir cümle geldiğinde that ile bağlanıyor — ama konuşmada neredeyse her zaman atılıyor.
Türkçede "…-dığını" eki bu işi yapıyor ("geç kaldığını söyledi") ve her fiile uyuyor. İngilizcede uymuyor: say/tell/think/know that alıyor, ama want/ask/tell (emir) kişi + to alıyor. "I want that you come" hatasının kaynağı bu.
He said (that) he was late.
