15.3 unless, in case, as long as
Neden zorlanıyoruz
Türkçede koşulun tonunu ayrı kelimeler taşıyor: "-mezse", "ihtimaline karşı", "şartıyla", "olsa bile", "yoksa". İngilizcede bunların her birinin karşılığı var ama ikisi özellikle tuzaklı.
unless olumsuzluğu içinde taşıyor: unless = if … not. Türkçede "-mezse" eki de öyle. Ama "gelmezsen" cümlesindeki olumsuzluğu İngilizcede iki kez koyma eğilimi var: "unless you don't come" ✗.
in case ise "eğer" değil, "ihtimaline karşı" demek. Bu ayrım Türkçede de var ama çeviride kayboluyor:
• I'll take an umbrella if it rains. → Yağarsa alırım (yağdığını görünce).
• I'll take an umbrella in case it rains. → Yağar diye alırım (şimdiden, önlem).
Hepsinde ortak kural değişmiyor: bu bağlaçların yanında da will olmuyor.
unless: ...-mezse
unless = if … not. Olumsuzluğu kendi taşıyor, bir daha olumsuz yapılmıyor.
unless her zaman if…not yerine geçemiyor. Sonuç hakkında konuşuyorsan uyuyor, ama duygu ya da varsayım anlatıyorsan uymuyor: "I'd be surprised if he didn't come" doğru, "unless he came" tuhaf. Şüphedeysen if…not kullan — her zaman güvenli.
I won't go unless you come with me.
Sen gelmezsen gitmem.

If you don't study, you'll fail. = Unless you study, you'll fail.
You can't enter unless you have a ticket.
in case: ihtimaline karşı
Bir şeyi önlem olarak yapıyorsun. Olay olmasa da yaptığın şey yapılmış oluyor — if'ten temel farkı bu.
Take an umbrella in case it rains.
Yağar diye — şimdiden al.
Take an umbrella if it rains.
Yağıyorsa al — farklı anlam.
I'll write it down in case I forget.

Koşulu bir şart olarak öne sürüyor. provided that daha resmi.

even if ve even though
Bir harf fark, tamamen farklı anlam: even if varsayım, even though gerçek.
Ayırt etme: even if olabilir de olmayabilir, even though oldu. İkincisi aslında koşul değil, karşıtlık bağlacı — although ile aynı grupta (17.2).
I'll go even if it rains.
Yağsa bile — yağıp yağmayacağı belli değil.
I went even though it was raining.
Yağmasına rağmen — yağıyordu.
Even if you apologise, she won't forgive you.
Even if it was raining, I went.
Even though it was raining, I went.
otherwise: yoksa
Sonucu tersten söylüyor: "şunu yapma, yoksa şu olur".
Hurry up, otherwise we'll miss the train.
Yoksa treni kaçırırız.
Write it down, otherwise you'll forget.
Unless we hurry, we'll miss the train.
Aynı anlam, ters kuruluş.
I'd better go, otherwise I'll be late.
whether ... or: ...-se de
İki ihtimalin ikisinde de sonuç aynıysa whether kullanılıyor.
I'm going whether you like it or not.
Whether it rains or not, we'll go.
I don't know whether to go or stay.
whether + to: karar verememek.
Let me know if you're coming.
Dolaylı soruda if de kullanılıyor.
